Welcome to Exercise Outdoors!

Little Girl Playing Outside in WaterDid you know that one of the main goals of the Washington, D.C. Healthy Schools Act is to have students engage in physical activity for 60 minutes each day? Park Rx America (PRA) is here to help make that a reality - and with the added benefits that come from being in nature at the same time.

The Office of State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) has partnered with PRA to implement a school program called "Exercise Outdoors!" to increase student physical activity through visits to parks or other natural areas during the school year.

The program provides students with personalized physical activity in nature goals consisting of a recommendation to spend time outdoors engaged in a moderate-to-vigorous activity of their choice during out-of-school time. School administrators and teachers who participate in this program are trained in the Exercise Outdoors! Goal Creation and Tracking Tool available via the PRA platform.

This zero-cost program provides training, an educational video, program guidelines, promotional materials, technology, and online assistance to help each school encourage the health, wellbeing, and academic success of their students.

Use the links in the sidebar to find out more about how this program works for you, your classroom, and/or your family.

For Educators

The Exercise Outdoors! program is designed to provide school administrators and teachers with the support they need to meet the goals of the Washington, D.C. Healthy Schools Act. But more than simply encouraging students to spend 60 minutes a day outside in physical activity, this program offers many benefits for the entire school community:

  • Spending time in natural environments can increase physical activity levels and decrease the risk of developing chronic diseases, leading to healthier students
  • Students who have greater engagement with nature can benefit academically from improved attention and impulse control, leading to fewer classroom disruptions, as well as improved cognitive functioning
  • This program utilizes local, accessible parks and nature spaces to influence positive health outcomes; as such, it can support existing school initiatives, such as school gardens
  • Results of this program - such as the completion of a Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child Assessment - can help inform further capacity building for your school to provide continued quality physical activity programming for students (with ongoing use of the current PRA platform for free!)

For Families

Kids Racing OutsideThe Exercise Outdoors! program is designed to provide students with the encouragement they need to spend 60 minutes a day outside engaged in a physical activity in order to receive these benefits:

  • Spending time in natural environments can increase physical activity levels and decrease the risk of developing chronic diseases, leading to healthier students
  • Students who have greater engagement with nature can benefit academically from improved attention and impulse control, leading to fewer classroom disruptions, as well as improved cognitive functioning

How This Works

School administrators and teachers are being trained on how to help students with Goal Creation - a personalized recommendation for when and where to spend time outdoors and for what physical activity to do while outside. This could be playing basketball at the park, taking the family dog for a walk around the neighborhood, or any other moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in a safe and accessible location.

Once the student has created their Exercise Outdoors! Goal, they can track their progress toward their goal by downloading the Exercise Outdoors! mobile app or logging into the Exercise Outdoors! Goal Tracking website. Don't worry, the app and website do not record any personal identification information from the student, nor does it have GPS tracking. Your student's health and safety are our top priority.

We hope you and your student will enjoy the many wonderful health and wellbeing benefits of engaging in physical activity outdoors! If you have any questions, please email us at info@parkrxamerica.org.
